Screen printing on tote bags — Spain
Corporate tote bags screen-printed in manual and rotary systems with OEKO-TEX-certified water-based inks, produced from our Madrid hub with IVA 21% invoiced via FACe/SII (AEAT) and shipped across Spain and the Balearics.
Why screen printing is still the dominant technique on tote bags
The tote bag is probably the item where screen printing shows its best cost-to-finish ratio on the Spanish market. The flat, generous surface of the body — usually 280 × 320 mm to 380 × 420 mm depending on model — accepts screens up to 50 × 70 cm without tension, which maximises print area per unit of time. Versus DTF or transfer, screen printing lays an ink film integrated into the fibre instead of a film overlaid on top, so the touch stays natural even on heavier weights (380-450 g/m²).
The technique fits especially well medium and large corporate runs — from 250 to 50,000 units — where the screen cost amortises with margin. For runs under 100 units we recommend digital transfer due to its lower pre-production cost, but above that threshold screen printing pulls ahead. Wash durability is also superior: with OEKO-TEX water-based inks and curing at 160 °C, totes hold 60-80 domestic wash cycles before the print loses vibrancy, depending on colour and substrate.
We run two screen systems. Manual on M&R Sportsman 6-8 head tables for runs of 100 to 5,000 units, ideal for programmes with 1-4 colours and variable placement. Rotary with a 12-colour rotary cylinder for runs of 5,000 to 50,000 units in one or two flat colours — the system most Spanish fair and mass-event programmes use. Inks are always water-based, phthalate-free, formaldehyde-free and APEO-free; OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and REACH SVHC < 0.1 % compliant.
Tote bag types and standard combinations
We handle six base models that cover the bulk of Spanish B2B programmes. Classic 140-180 g/m² cotton tote with 60 cm handles — the cheapest version, ideal for fair and congress delegate bags (Fitur Madrid, Mobile World Congress Barcelona, ISE Barcelona, SIMO Madrid, Fruit Attraction Madrid). Reinforced 280-380 g/m² cotton tote with cross-stitched handles — the standard format for corporate welcome kits at hotels, banks and insurers. GRS 50/50 recycled canvas tote (50 % recycled cotton, 50 % virgin cotton) for programmes with audited ESG claim. 100 % GOTS 220 g/m² organic cotton tote — preferred option for premium programmes and for non-profit fundraising (Fundación Telefónica, Fundación La Caixa, Hospital Universitario La Paz, Hospital Vall d'Hebron).
175-220 g/m² RPET polyester tote made from recycled bottles — the fastest-growing format (+34 % YoY 2026) for its sustainability/price mix. Mixed cotton-jute tote with stain-resistant treatment — the premium-look option for VIP gifting at wineries and restaurants. For consumer-goods merchandise programmes (breweries such as Mahou, Estrella Damm, Cruzcampo; cosmetics brands such as Puig, L'Oréal; retailers such as Zara, Mango, El Corte Inglés) the version with interior pocket and side gusset is the most used.
Standard dimensions are 38 × 42 cm, 35 × 40 cm and 30 × 35 cm (the latter for compact formats and multi-unit packs). The 100 g/m² weight is reserved for single-use fair bags, while 220-450 g/m² is the corporate default for durability. Handles can be tubular cotton (sewn to the body, 60-65 cm long) or woven cotton tape (more visible, with optional stain-resistant treatment). The inner lining comes in raw finish or dyed; premium bags carry a box-bottom gusset that gives them real volume.
Screen printing technical specifications
The process starts with colour separation of the artwork. We work in Adobe Illustrator with FOGRA39 profiles for offset or, in textile screen printing, with specific profiles from the ink supplier. For typical corporate logos (1-3 flat inks) we use direct water-based inks without halftone; for images with gradients (event photo, corporate landscape) we use halftone AM or FM screen at 65-85 LPI. Emulsion is diazo-photo-sensitive, aluminium frames screen down to 50 microns and meshes run 43, 61, 77, 100 or 120 threads per inch depending on detail.
Curing runs through an electric tunnel dryer at 150-180 °C for 60-90 seconds per unit, which ensures full ink polymerisation and wash resistance. Quality checks apply every 250 units: deposit measurement with micrometer, tape adhesion test ASTM D3359, Crockmeter rub fastness ISO 105-X12 (grade 4-5 on wool), wash fastness ISO 105-C06 (grade 4 on multifibre). The batch register is filed for 5 years and delivered with every shipment.
The most common print placements are chest-centre (horizontally centred at 60-80 mm from the top edge), top-left corner (small watermark-style logo), full surface (event programmes with a repeating pattern of the logo) and interior pocket (premium programmes with hidden message). For winery gift programmes the exterior pocket placement is also used to carry the vintage and club member name.
Pricing, MOQ and Madrid lead times
Prices in EUR excluding IVA. IVA 21% added on Spanish B2B invoices issued via FACe/SII (AEAT). Intra-EU with valid VIES is billed under reverse charge; UK and non-EU exempt. For the Canary Islands IGIC 7 % applies on production of proof; for Ceuta and Melilla IPSI by local council. MOQ by design and colour: 100 units for manual screen with 1-3 colours, 250 units for 4-6 colours or photographic reproduction, 1,000 units for rotary. Short runs from 50 units are accepted with pre-production surcharge (fixed cost per screen €60-110).
Indicative per-unit prices excluding IVA for 1-colour screen on 140 g/m² cotton tote: €1.20-1.85 (100-250 ud), €1.05-1.40 (500 ud), €0.85-1.10 (1,000 ud), €0.70-0.90 (5,000 ud). Add €0.18-0.30 per unit for 2 colours; add €0.40-0.55 for 3 colours. For higher weights (280-380 g/m²) and GRS-recycled substrates prices rise €0.30-0.70 per unit. From 5,000 units the 8-15 % volume tier unlocks, and from 10,000 units the 14-22 % tier depending on complexity.
Standard lead time 12-16 working days after physical strike-off approval (printed sample). Rush production 7-9 days at +25 % surcharge. Express 5 working days at +45 % subject to capacity. Series above 10,000 units are scheduled as a dedicated run with weekly progress reporting. Delivery is coordinated from the Madrid hub with the same bands described elsewhere in the network: M-30 express, rest of peninsula 24-48 h, Balearics 24 h air or 4-6 days sea, Canary Islands by volume.
Compliance, certifications and traceability
All inks meet OEKO-TEX Standard 100 class I (safe for skin and food contact) and REACH SVHC < 0.1 %. Cotton substrates carry OEKO-TEX; GOTS and GRS options ship with verifiable transaction certificate on blockchain or via the certifier's serial number. The electronic invoice is issued with 21 % IVA broken out via FACe/SII (AEAT) in FacturaE-XML format with electronic signature, valid for supported IVA recovery by the B2B client.
Quality controls are documented per batch: optical density with X-Rite spectrophotometer, Crockmeter rub fastness (minimum grade 4 on wool), wash fastness ISO 105-C06 (minimum grade 4 on multifibre), Martindale abrasion resistance (minimum 20,000 cycles), handle tensile strength ASTM D5034 (minimum 200 N per handle). Reports are delivered with the invoice or uploaded to the client's B2B portal. The quality policy covers print defects, colour misalignment, staining and premature breakage; any incident is resolved by replacement, credit note or refund at the client's choice.
